Owning a stable has been my dream since first sliding my foot into a stirrup at five years old. Over 30 years later, I decided it was time to make this dream a reality. It's not about chasing your dreams; it's about catching them. With the love and support of my husband, friends, and family, Sheridan Stables opened August 1, 2010.
I've been riding and showing horses since 1986. My first official lessons were at Perfecta Farm. Nothing I've ever done has come as naturally or felt as right as learning to ride. My first show was just a year later, and although my first ribbon was red not blue, I was pretty thrilled.
Once I had the horse bug, there was no stopping me! I wanted to do more, learn more and show more! Luckily, my parents were supportive. They helped me take the next step, and I started leasing a horse so I could ride and show more. This horse was a Morgan, and I began actively showing in the Morgan Horse world. I won many consecutive year-end championships in Hunt Seat and Western disciplines with the Indiana Morgan Horse Club and Indiana Saddle Horse Association. In addition to breed shows, I pretty much showed in every competition I could get to. I joined the Fulton County 4H Horse and Pony Club and served as Club President for three years. One of my proudest moments was when I won Grand Champion at the Indiana State Fair in Hunt Seat Equitation Jr. Exhibitor in 1989. My general horse knowledge was advanced through participation on numerous Judging Teams, through which I competed and won on a statewide level. I also participated several years in Hippology and grooming competition. During this time, I purchased two young horses, and partnered with some good trainers, worked through the process of breaking, training and showing them. It was also during this time that I began giving riding lessons to beginning hunter riders.
In 1997, I went to Purdue University, where I spent three years as a pre-veterinary student. I learned a lot while there and also decided I wasn't sure I wanted to be a vet. I competed on the Purdue Equestrian Team for one year and placed first in several events. While on the team, I rode at Foxton Farm. For the first time since Perfecta Farm, I worked on my skills as a hunter jumper. Unfortunately, as for many college students, finances became an issue and I was unable to continue the equestrian team. I took a two-year break from riding, which seemed like an eternity.
In 2000, I moved with my parents to Decatur, IN and finished my degree in Visual Communications and Design at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. More importantly, just like kismet, I found rider and trainer Lynda Weese. The training I received from Lynda, and the time spent as her working student, was very valuable. It is with her that my equestrian mind was expanded and I was introduced to classical horsemanship and a more pure form of riding, dressage. The challenge of dressage was the key to re-invigorating my passion for riding. While riding with Lynda, I expanded my skills further by riding with clinician and former Olympic Team member, Ed Rothkranz. While working as Lynda Weese's assistant, I fell in love with the quality warmblood horses that Ed bred and raised.
In 2003, I purchased a Rhineland mare, Della Mond from Ed at Rhineland Stud Farm. For the next year, I traveled and trained with Ed in the process of breaking and training Della. I have never been so moved as participating with Ed in the process he used to break and train young horses. It was a truly harmonious and natural process, and my desire to learn dressage only became more intense. After bringing Della home, we had many challenges. Once again, I worked with Lynda to help me through the process. Della and I have come a long way. Remaining a competitive rider while getting married and having my two beautiful children has proved challenging, but my passion for riding continues and has grown.
Della and I have big goals for the future. We plan to work hard and move up the dressage levels! I'm a strong believer that a rider can always benefit from lessons and new experiences and never reaches perfection. For this reason, I joined the Indiana Dressage Society. There are always opportunities to learn!
Over the years, my interest in making my horse happy and healthy has risen to the top of my list of goals. At Sheridan Stables, I'm making sure this happens every day.
